Description

Hey hey kids ;) Here we have my interpretation for another Czechoslovak urban legend from war. During the Second World War a mysterious figure was said to prowl the streets of Slovak capital city of Bratislava. Slovakia was at that time independent, but turned into a fascist puppet state, serving the Third Reich so of course because of the danger of Alied bombers, the citywide blackout has been instituted during the evening and night hours. In these dark streets, people said to have seen a figure in a long black coat, which he was opening in front of women, who were walking the streets alone. Under his coat, he was wearing a tight black overall with a skeleton painted on with green glowing phosphorous paint. After the women saw the glowing skeleton, they fainted in horror and the man robbed them. He became to be known as Fosforak – the Phosphorous man ( or in some versions also as the Skeleton, Phosphoroskeleton or the Glowing skeleton) He has never been caught, even though there are rumors of German soldiers, Slovak police officers and even later State Security agency agents in the 1980s during the communist regime trying to catch him. Some versions state that he was appearing mostly at the Jakub’s square, where the bombs fell, and some of those bombs might have contained phosphorus, and thus he might have been sort of a mutant byproduct of the bombing. Who knows? Also interesting is to point out that while his cousin Spring man, became a patriot fighting the Nazis, Phosphorous man was always a villain and a thief, attacking people and causing terror among citizens. Some version also describe him to carrying a scythe and decapitating people on the streets, while leaving specs of phosphorous powder and glowing footprints as his signature. Although no version has stated any sexual motive, no rape, no molestation, just thievery and murder.
After the end of totalitarian regime and separation of Czech Republic from Slovakia, his legend fell into obscurity and it is hard to find any information about him or his whereabouts. So it is probably just another scary urban legend, created by a collective feeling of fear and insecurity which manifested in such bizarre form. I hope you will enjoy it and if any of you know any interesting urban legends that might deserve to be immortalized in paper, let me know. I would love to hear them.
